Should I Peel or Flake After an Acne Treatment?

acne treatment

” I had my first acne treatment peel a week ago. I have not seen any peeling or flaking…”

Do not fret as you are still in the early stages of the treatment. Patience is key with chemical peels!

The visible reaction caused by chemical peels during and post-treatment varies per individual. There are a few key points we will cover as we help you understand your skins’ response and expectations for your recent acne treatment peel.

1 | The waiting period

At this point, it is too soon to rate the success of your treatment. Your skin is still undergoing the process of lifting the layer of skin that was separated during the application of the peel. Once the skin has fully separated from the underlying skin cells, it will begin to shed. This can take up to 2 weeks.

2 | Not all skins shed alike

When we google or hear the term ‘chemical peel’, we assume our skin will be immediately shedding in sheets or visible patches of skin.

The visible reaction through the healing process depends on the skin type and condition being treated. Oily and acne-prone skin is coarser and has a thicker oil barrier holding the skin cells together. Shedding occurs most during and after cleansing and even so does not flake like a dry skin type. Trust in the process and use exfoliant 2-3 times a week for an added boost.

3 | Number of peels

Peels are most effective when delivered in a controlled manner in order to avoid injury and produce lasting results.

To begin, the skin is treated using lighter peels in order to increase the skin’s tolerance. With each treatment, the intensity of the peels is increased until optimal results are achieved. This measured approach allows for the application of stronger acids with less risk of causing adverse reactions or irreversible damage to the skin. Keep in mind that the stronger the peel, the more visible reaction during and post-treatment.

Although the name and online visuals of the treatment can lead one to believe that all peels should cause major flaking and sloughing, this is not always the case. Be patient with your progress and trust that your skin is operating in its’ own unique way and the skin is rejuvenating on a microscopic level regardless of what you see with the naked eye.

September Special- FREE AHA/BHA Peel Boost to your LUX or Back Treatment

Throughout August, we are adding a free AHA/BHA Peel boost ($40 value) to all LUX  facials and Back Treatments!

The LUX

The LUX facial is what its name surmises, luxury.

Skincare, massage, and brows all in one package.

Your skin is treated to a thorough deep pore cleanse and exfoliation. After a warm steam session, extractions release impurities and debris from the skin. Masking and moisture care infuses your skin with nutrients.

Whether you have blemishes, dry, oily, or acne prone skin, our custom applications ensure that we address your specific needs every time.

Your hands, arms, shoulders, neck, and face are treated to a relaxing combination of Swedish and Pressure point massage.

That’s not all though, your spa session is finished off with a dérmica brow Shape, leaving your face looking and feeling anew!

AHA/BHA Peel Boost

AHA/BHA acids are ideal for treating active acne conditions, dry skin, pigmentation, and fine lines. They can be layered and are available in varying degrees of intensity.

The AHA/BHA Boost is a light acid peel that gives your skin that gentle boost it needs to self-regenerate and repair. There is an expected downtime of 1-3 days depending on your skin.

The BACK Treatment

Our Back Treatment, a facial for your back, begins with a deep pore cleanse followed by exfoliation to remove build up and dead skin. Next, we apply a professional extraction fluid that opens the pores and softens the oil and debris that causes clogged pores.

A relaxing steam session warms and softens the skin before the manual extractions begin. Your technician releases the trapped debris inside the pores using an extraction tool.

Steamed towels are used to wipe the skin clean in preparation to close the pores with toner. Toner is used to give your skin a boost of hydration which helps draw moisture deeper into the skin. Your back is then massaged with nutrients through a custom mask application. Ideal for all skin types.

This special is not valid with any other offer/promotion. Offer valid from September 3-28, 2019. No pre-purchasing.  BOOK NOW.

Struggling with Blackheads

Here’s our latest “Ask Dérmica” entry…

Hi Dérmica,
I’m struggling with blackheads. I just wonder if you can help with this problem.
Please give me some information of any technique that could help to reduce or get rid of blackheads.
Thank you so much.

Hello!

Blackheads are a common skin issue that can easily be treated at Dérmica. We recommend a 2-part treatment as follows:

Step 1:  PORE Facial ($85) to remove the existing blackheads from the pores. This treatment includes cleansing, exfoliation, steaming, and pore extractions.

Step 2: Photofacial ($45 – $175) to seal the pores closed and reduce the appearance of uneven texture and redness caused by enlarged pores. This treatment is performed by using IPL (Intense Pulse Light) device to treat the targeted condition.

Bookings are available at dermica.ca/book-now.

Hope this information helps…😊

To manage larger pores, we recommend the Daily Hydration to improve your skin’s ability to retain moisture. Also, avoid exfoliants that contain granules and opt for an enzyme exfoliant, such as the Phyto Calm Enzyme Mask.

Glo Skin Beauty formulas are paraben-free and safe for the most sensitive of skin types. Above all, their research and technology result in a skincare line that clinically transforms the skin.

March Special: ALL Peels $85

DERMICA chemical peels

March 2019 Special: ALL Chemical Peels- $85

How do Chemical Peels work?

Chemical peels work by separating the upper layers of the skin causing an accelerated cell turnover rate. Because of their molecular structure, they are able to penetrate past the acid mantle of the skin and deep into the layers beneath the surface of the skin. This causes your skin to shed and regenerate a new layer of skin in a 1 to 2 week period.

The acids we use in our professional chemical peels are typically derived from natural sources and produced for safe usage on the skin.
