Who is not suitable for dermaplaning?

dermaplaning edmonton, yeg dermaplaning, dermaplaning contraindications,

Can anyone get dermaplaning?

We understand the appeal. What is there not to like about dermaplane? It’s a non-invasive skin resurfacing treatment that yields fabulous results! However, not everyone is suitable for dermaplaning.

Physically compromised skin is not suitable. For example, clients with a medical skin condition such as psoriasis, eczema, or other forms of dermatitis. Also, clients with severe cystic acne accompanied by inflammation in the skin or infections are not eligible for dermaplane.

Dermaplane with caution

Other types of contraindications exist where we can proceed with caution. For example, we take additional safety measures when dermaplaning on clients that have blood coagulating abnormalities. The reason for this is that these clients bleed more profusely and don’t clot properly.

Additional measures are also taken when dermaplaning on clients that have senile skin.

What can you do instead of dermaplaning?

If you are not eligible for a dermaplaning treatment, there are other resurfacing treatment options.

Chemical resurfacing

If you are unable to get dermaplaning due to mechanical compromise, you may benefit from chemical exfoliation. Chemical peels are a great alternative. A chemical peel is the application of a product that soaks in and dissolves the dead skin.

If what you were hoping to achieve with dermaplane is brightening, then go for an alphahydroxy-based peel. For those not eligible for demaplane due to acne, a betahydroxy acid peel is a great way to pretreat and prepare the skin for future dermaplane.

Light-based resurfacing

Photofacials are a light-based form of resurfacing. Photofacials target the structural cells of the skin which then regenerate and cause the old ones to move up and shed.

Milder options

If you are unable to get dermaplaning and are looking for a milder option than the aformentioned treatments, a facial could do the trick.

Facials involve deep cleansing and exfoliation by means of scrub exfoliants or enzymatic exfoliants. Peel boost containing alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acids are highly recommended in order to achieve as close brightening results as possible to a dermaplaning treatment.

Hair removal

If the hair removal benefits is what a client is looking for in dermaplaning, we recommend waxing or IPL hair removal.

Lash Growth Serum Canada

best lash growth serum canada

Dérmica is a retailer of Adoreyes Lash Growth Serum in Canada.

Do lash and brow growth serums really work?

You bet they do! While some work better than others, many contain a special formula to thicken and strengthen eyelashes and eyebrows.

Our top 3 rated serums include EyEnvy, Latisse (must be prescribed), and Adoreyes. Unfortunately, EyEnvy was discontinued and is no longer available in Canada as a lash and brow growth serum.

What are the key ingredients in Adoreyes?

Adoreyes boasts their Triple Peptide Complex technology:

  • The Vitamin and Hydro Complex with Biotin, Niacinamide, and Panthenol moisturizes lashes and brows to make them look lush and beautiful while offering significant results without harmful ingredients.
  • Botanical Extracts such as pumpkin and grape seeds boost the health of natural lashes and eyebrows by conditioning and protecting them from breakage and dryness.
  • The Repair and Damage Complex with Arginine and amino acids rejuvenates and fortifies eyelashes and eyebrows.

Treat and hydrate…

Keeping your lashes hydrated and enriched with nutrients will help prevent premature breakage and treat dry brittle lashes. Much like the hair on our head our lashes also benefit from added moisture.

Lash conditioners feed the hair strands with specialized nutrients that encourage new and longer hair growth. The lashes are able to rebuild and strengthen for better application in the future. Most conditioners are also compatible and recommended for use even with lash extensions.

Tips for Lasting Microblading Results

tips for lasting microblading results

We offer microblading in Edmonton, Alberta. We know you’re gonna love your microblading and we want to help you keep it as long as possible. Here are some tips on lasting microblading results.

Minimize sun exposure

Keep your face shaded from the sun as often as possible to help prevent premature pigment loss. Avoid direct sunlight, this can cause the pigment to fade and irritate the skin.

Minimize use of anti-age products on brows

Hydroxy acids such AHA/BHA, Vitamin C concentrates, and other exfoliants can compromise the results and longevity of your microblading. For lasting microblading results, minimize these products during healing time.

Once your brows begin scab or flake, apply a small amount of the moisturizer over the brows after washing in the morning and evening. During your recovery, your brows may feel a bit itchy. Applying a cooling mask such as the Cucumber Recovery Mask reduces irritation.

Avoid overworking the skin

Be gentle when cleansing, exfoliating, or applying brow makeup or other products in the brow area as this can overstimulate the skin.

Gently cleanse lower half and forehead with your daily cleanser in the morning. When rinsing cleanser away, use a warm face cloth avoiding drip from forehead onto brows.

Dampen a clean gauze or cotton pad with the cleanser and gently wipe brows in outward motion. Blot dry with dry gauze/pad.

Once your brows begin scab or flake, apply a small amount of the moisturizer over the brows after washing in the morning and evening.

Hot Yoga and Your Skin

hot yoga effects on skin

Does hot yoga cause facial skin irritation?

Hot yoga effects on the skin will vary according to the individual’s skin type, age, and other health related factors.

Under-stimulated skin types such as dry or mature will benefit from the stimulation brought on by the steam. Heat helps increase circulation which can in turn aid in stimulating the oil production and absorption levels of the skin.

Natural processes have slowed down in aging skin in particular. The stimulation caused by the heat will help increase the cell turnover rate, and hydration and moisture levels that decrease with age.

There are certain skin conditions or medications that can cause the skin to become sensitive or sensitized to heat application. This includes the hot yoga. The two main skin care concerns we see as technicians resulting from heat sensitivity are Rosacea and Acne.

Rosacea & Acne prone skin

Rosacea is aggravated by the application of heat. A person with this condition may cause potential harm to their skin.

Acne prone skin types will see an increase in oil production. As a result, they end up making their skin more susceptible to bacterial infections. This is because they are sweating profusely while the pores are open by the added heat and humidity.

Exposure frequency

If you are exposing your skin to that level of heat and activity on a daily basis, regarding of your skin type, hot yoga is going to have damaging effects on your skin. Overheating the skin can have a drying effect and cause inflammation and vascular lesions on the skin.

Tips to heal heat damage

If you love hot yoga and are regularly participating, there are things you can do to counteract the effects of the heat exposure.

One thing you can do is ensure that you always do a cold wash after your workout. In other words, don’t wait to wash your face until you get home. It’s not so much about cleaning it, it’s about calming it. Once you get home you can do a deep cleanse and care using nourishing products such as masks or serums that contain hyaluronic acid or aloe vera.

If you are a dryer skin type, make sure that you use the appropriate moisturizer for your skin to lock in the hydration. If you have acne-prone skin, you may benefit from a cleanser that contains salicylic acid which will help counterbalance the increased oil production caused by the heat exposure.

Microblading: Pain, Cost, Risk, and Healing Time

microblading whyte avenue faq

We offer microblading services on Whyte avenue in Edmonton, Alberta. As skin experts, knowledge of the skin gives Dérmica comprehensive insight. We have over 10 years of experience delivering this procedure. Here are some frequently asked questions.

Is microblading painful?

With proper numbing and preparation of the skin, most clients will report a 0.5/5 at the beginning and a 3/5 towards the end of their service. Personal pain tolerance also has a lot to do it.

microblading pain level minimize
Avoid morning coffee on appointment day.

Tips to minimize discomfort during your appointment

To decrease pain level, we recommend taking some precautions prior to your appointment. For example, avoid all forms of caffeine the morning of your appointment and get enough sleep the night before. Menstruation may cause extra sensitivity in women.

If you are taking any medication we recommend talking to your pharmacist. Some medications are a contraindication to microblading, for example, blood thinners. Blood thinners thin the blood which cause you to bleed more during microblading. This can result in less retention of pigment.

How much does microblading cost?

Brow design is not ‘one size fits all’. Nor do all brows start with the same foundation. That is why we offer 3 levels of microblading at Dérmica:

I: Provides up to 30% brow coverage. It is often selected when the goal is to increase the definition of your brow line, add density to thinning areas, fill small gaps and scars, or balance the overall brow shape.

II: Remodels your brow shape, balances highly uneven brows, fill-in gaps, scars, increases density and thickness in sparse brows. It provides an additional 60% brow coverage.

III: Restores your brows from tip-tip and top-bottom with a complete coverage of severely thinned brows or missing brows.

What is the healing time for microblading?

Microblading requires down time. Healing can take up to 10 days and varies with each individual. You may encounter certain indications as you heal.

Are there risks for microblading?

Microblading, like all other forms of tattooing, has risks associated with the procedure that though uncommon- such as the transmission of blood borne pathogenic organisms or reactions to pigment ingredients- must be reviewed. Please review the list of contraindications before booking your service.

Longevity of service

This process can take up to 3 years with proper care and maintenance. The longevity of your procedure comes down to the following factors: The depth of the incision, the thickness of the skin, and pre and post treatment care.

Making the incisions too deep will cause the pigment to be deposited in the dermis layer of your skin thereby making your procedure permanent. Not going deep enough will make your brows fade prematurely.

As far as skin thickness is concerned, thicker skin generally means that there are more pores and the skin is oilier. The skin thins as we age so typically, older people have thinner skin, as well as people with a fair skin tone.

We help you take necessary precautions with Pre-Treatment guidelines to ensure safety and effectiveness, and to increase the success rate of your microblading procedure.

Are there risks to tinting your eyelashes?

lash tint safe

Is Lash Tint Safe?

Generally speaking, lash tint is safe and does not damage the eyes. The tints used on eyelashes are a mild version of hair dye. Usually, they are vegetable-based with a very low peroxide content. If or when there is irritation, it can be due to previous conditions such as sensitive or watery eyes, folliculitis, or skin irritations surrounding the eye area or other forms of dermatitis.

If someone is experiencing a case of folliculitis it could also be attributed to that. Otherwise, in a professional setting the service is safe.

What should you avoid after eyelash tint?

You should avoid the application of eye makeup and cleansing of the eye area for up to 48 hours if possible. Doing so allows the colour to properly saturate and set into the cuticle of the hair.

How often is it safe to tint eyelashes?

Eyelash tinting can be done every 4-6 weeks.

Does tint weaken the eyelashes?

Lash tint does not weaken the lashes. As mentioned above, the tint is a mild formulation that does not change the hair growth pattern or penetrate deep into the hair. However, like any form of chemical processing- mild or intense- you should always be conditioning, not only for the health of the hair but also to prolong the results of your service.
