What is a vascular lesion and where do they come from?
Vascular lesions are due to conditions such as Rosacea, couperose skin, sensitized skin, or simply genetics. Frequent, consistent redness and broken capillaries are typical characteristics present of these types of conditions.
Vascular lesions are most commonly found in the facial and neck area. If left untreated these conditions can worsen, or mutate the skin’s texture.
Vascular Lesion Treatment
We treat these conditions with phototherapy. Photofacials emit light energy into the skin. The light beam destroys specified targets without damaging the surrounding tissue. After that, the blood coagulates and the vessels break into tiny particles that are naturally filtered away through the body’s lymphatic system.
The ALIVIA photofacial will diminish redness and dissolve broken capillaries on areas of the face, neck, chest, arms, and hands.
We use Sharplight’s Formax-VP System. Their DPC technology makes your treatments safe and effective in less time. Above all, you can rest assured that your treatment is performed by a qualified technician with your comfort in mind.

Ingrown toenail removal can cause immediate relief. An ingrown toenail is a nail that has grown outside of the nail grooves where the nail typically grows along. The nail grooves are like tracks that guide the nail out towards the tip of the toe. Sometimes the nail grooves are diverted due to genetics. Sometimes they can become diverted by an injury or constant pressure on the toenail.
This causes the nail to grow into the side walls (the skin tissue that surrounds the sides of the nail) creating pressure and at times breaking through the skin. This can then lead to infection and inflammation, severe pain, and trouble walking and wearing closed-toe shoes. They can even cause pain during sleeping from any pressure, for example sheets, blankets, or socks.
Ingrown toenails can be caused by improper cutting. Typically the nail is cut too short or cut into the sidewall corners of the nail and left jagged with the a portion that can then pierce through the skin as it grows upwards and gets snagged in the skin.
Can work boots cause ingrown toenails?
Considering the amount of moisture and pressure that can occur in the heavy work boots, it can aggravate the condition if it is pre-existing, or it can potentially cause enough trauma to the nail to cause an ingrown toenail.
Can a pedicure remove an ingrown toenail?
A basic pedicure cannot remove an ingrown toenail. The training is different to perform this type of pedicure due to the fact that improper methods can cause infections. At Dérmica, we offer advanced pedicures. The pedicure performed to remove ingrown toenails is called the “Ingrown pedicure“.
In the Ingrown pedicure, the nails are properly prepared for removal . The area is kept clean and sanitized while specialized tools and extraction methods are used. Plus, proper aftercare instructions and products for home care are provided.
Can I wear work boots after ingrown toenail removal?
Once the ingrown nail is removed, immediate relief is felt. It is recommended that you let the ingrown area heal. We recommend waiting about 72 hours onward, depending on how deep the ingrown was, before you start wearing work boots again.
Are ingrown toenails recurring after the Ingrown pedicure?
Ingrown toenails can be recurring if they are due to genetics, or caused by trauma to the root of the nail or untreated fungus.
The ingrown pedicure can correct ingrown nails if they are not due to genetics. For example, if you have deformed toenails naturally, ingrown toenails will always happen. They can be maintained with an Ingrown pedicure twice a year in combination with regular pedicures every 2-3 months.
On the other hand, if the ingrown nail is due to injury, the Ingrown pedicure can correct the ingrown nail permanently.
Located in South Edmonton, we offer Lash Lift services. Lash lifts are a gentle form of lash perming that curls the natural lashes along the lash line. It gives the appearance of longer more feminine lashes.
Lash lifts can last up to 12 weeks depending on after-care products used and thickness of lashes. Try to minimize rubbing and use gentle products on the eye area. Thick lashes are more resistant and will fall faster than thin lashes.
It is recommended that clients wait 12 weeks between lash lifts. This allows your hair to recover and regenerate new growth.
What can go wrong during a Lash Lift?
It is rare for reactions to occur as the products are kept strictly on the lashes. People who have sensitivity to latex are not recommended to have the service, as the adhesive used does contain latex.
If you have ever reacted to artificial lash glue used for strip lashes, you are at risk of having a reaction. Typical allergic reaction will cause the eyes to swell for up to 72 hours.
How does it work?
The first step is to open the bonds in the hair, giving flexibility within the mid shaft where the curl is found. The second step sets the lashes into position and seals the hair shaft. The third step reintroduces moisture back into the lashes.
How do I care for my lashes after the treatment?
Avoid water for 48hrs, therefore, coming to your appointment with freshly washed hair will be of benefit.
You must also avoid makeup, and pressure on the lashes for 48hrs. It is recommended to sleep on your back in order to avoid bending the lashes overnight. Using a lash comb to lift and operate the lashes will help set.
Afterwards you can return to your regular routine and products.
Avoid the following summer skin care mistakes that lead to premature aging.
1. Excessive heat and sun exposure
Spending excessive time in the heat and sun results in the production of free radicals that harm your skin cells and contribute to premature aging. Excessive heat and sun exposure will damage the collagen cells and the elastin fibres. These two combined are responsible for your skin’s elasticity and firmness. This damage results in wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging of the skin. The skin can also look very dehydrated and creped with a leathery appearance.
Minimize the damage
In order to minimize this damage we can do things such as ensuring that anytime we are outdoors, we’re applying the appropriate protection which is typically recommended to be spf 30+. Keep in mind that you can get some sun protection from mineral makeup products if they are of high grade.
Another thing that we can do for summer skin care is use hats and umbrellas. Taking a break in the shade is important. Not only are the uv rays damaging to the skin, but also the overheating of the skin. This is going to cause inflammation which in turn will cause free radical damage in the skin.
Once you get home, you can do things to help cool the skin and calm the inflammation. For example, applying an aloe vera mask such as the Soothing Gel Mask will help. Other ways to reduce inflammation include using a cold jade roller. Even cold spoons kept in the fridge really help to cool the skin down when it has been overheated.
2. Not drinking enough water
We tend to be a little thirstier over the summer months with the heat and perhaps increased activity. So, making sure you are drinking enough water is very important for the skin. Dehydration can compromise the skin. It accelerates premature aging due to reduced elasticity and moisture levels in the skin. This is going to exacerbate the effects of uv damage. This will lead to wrinkles, fine lines, and uneven skin tone.
Minimize the damage
Taking steps to ensure you are drinking enough water everyday is very important in maintaining a healthy hydration, preventing moisture loss, and combating premature aging.
Aside from drinking enough water, its good to include products that contain hyaluronic acid in your skincare routine. These products will be very hydrating for the skin and help to give it that ‘dewy glow’. Hyaluronic acid works by applying hydration to the skin but also drawing hydration within the body to the surface of the skin.
3. Unhealthy lifestyle habits
Over the summer we tend to gather socially outdoors a lot more. For example, we gather on patios, barbecues, or at other social events that happen over the summer, such as weddings. There is usually a consumption of alcohol or smoking at these events. Often the dietary choices are delicious but aren’t the healthiest.
Minimize the damage
These things as a whole can cause oxidative stress, inflammation, and a breakdown of the collagen in the skin. When you are consuming things that are bad for you, try to decrease the amount you consume, or compensate by using products in your skin that are antioxidants. These products protect your skin from oxidative stressors and help improve the skin’s natural protective barriers.
Located in Edmonton, Dérmica offers short and long term solutions for bikini hair removal. Regardless of which method you choose, you can be sure that your technician will be efficient and effective.
Waxing- Short term hair removal
Generally, waxing involves the use of warm wax, typically honey or pine resin-based and cloth strips. The esthetician first preps the area by disinfecting and applying a protective barrier to the skin. Afterwards, the warm wax is then applied using a wooden spatula and covered with a cloth strip. The strip is then quickly pulled off parallel to the skin and voilà your skin is left smooth and hair free!
Results are visible for about 2 weeks, with 4-6 weeks before you are ready for your next visit. After care for waxing includes: avoiding heat, sun exposure, strong/fragranced, lotions, and washes for 24 hours and frequent skin exfoliation.
IPL- Long term hair removal
On the other hand, if you are searching for a permanent solution, opt for IPL hair removal treatments.
If you choose to have your treatment performed by the experts at Dérmica, here’s what you can expect:
Our tech begins by disinfecting your skin, she provides you with your protective eyewear, then off she goes zapping away.
Some lasers, like ours, are equipped with cooling systems, making your service a breeze. The cooling system makes your treatment significantly less painful (if at all), and 100% less messy than other lasers.
For the following 48 hours you will be required to avoid direct heat, perspiration, sun exposure, strong/fragranced soaps, lotions and washes.
French bikini hair removal offers more options for shaping and further removal. Most of the hair is removed from the front leaving a small patch of hair. This includes removal from underside, and excludes the backside.
Brazilian
Contrary to popular belief, the traditional method of Brazilian bikini hair removal does NOT leave you free of all hair below the waist. The traditional method leaves only a small strip down the centre.
So for you thong sporting ladies, a Brazilian bikini wax will give you the same flexibility with shape and coverage that the French bikini wax offers, but also clears any unwanted strays from the backside leaving you confident from any angle.
Hollywood
Who needs hair down there anyway? If this is your motto then opt for Hollywood bikini hair removal and liberate yourself from pubescent hair growth. This method will clear all existing hair from front to bunny tail leaving you G-string ready all around.
Located in Edmonton, Dérmica offers lash lift services to maximize your eye beauty. What the lash lift does is gently perm the eyelashes using a formula specifically created for the eye area.
What does the lash lift process look like?
The process typically involves a two-step process similar to hair perming. It gives the natural lashes a curl and lifting effect which gives the appearance of fuller, extended lashes.
How long does the lash lift last?
Maximum results are seen during the first few weeks after the service. But any effects it has on the natural hair strand will remain until that hair is naturally shed. Everyone’s rate varies but typically you’re looking at 20% shedding and regrowth every couple of weeks for the lash and brow areas. With that being said, you’re looking at 6-10 weeks.
Is a lash lift better than eyelash extensions?
In terms of safety, a lash lift and false eyelashes are about the same. If someone has sensitive eyes they will react to anything being placed on the eyes, for example, makeup or products being used in a service.
As far as the side effects on the natural lashes, a lash lift would have less potential side effects when it comes to the wear. During the service, we use and remove the products and thats the end of that. There is nothing left on the lashes such as products or tools that apply extra weight. On the other hand, with lash extensions you have an adhesive that you’ll be wearing until that lash sheds. Plus, it does add weight regardless of how amazing the technician and the products are. it’s still weighing on your lashes.
Does crying affect lash lift?
Crying will have negative effects if you’re doing it early into the 48-hour period. Unfortunately, it is going to have an effect on the longevity and efficacy of the service. It is important to keep your lashes dry during this period.
However, if it’s beyond that 48 hours it should not affect the wear- unless you’re rubbing your eyes a lot, applying pressure, or bending the lashes downward.
Do you still wear mascara with a lash lift?
You can apply mascara as often as you’d like. Its best to avoid oil-based eye makeup remover if you are getting a tint along with your service as this can strip your colour. In fact, any strong products over the eyes can minimize the effects. But with mascara you are good to go!
