Microblading brown and black skin

Is there a difference in approach?

There is variation when it comes to colour selection when microblading brown and black skin. However, as far as pre and post instructions and the actual procedure itself, we approach microblading the same across all skin types.

Anatomy

From an anatomy perspective, darker skin tones tend to be thicker, this is one of the reasons why they age slower. Additionally, in the ideal climate, darker skin tones tend to be a little oilier. That’s why some say black don’t crack.

The more melanin in the skin, the thicker it typically is; That is not to say it is not sensitive. But the sensitivity may not reflect visually. That is why certain advanced skincare treatments, for example, chemical peels or IPL laser, need to be delivered with caution as the skin may not show visible signs of sensitivity.

Things to consider

microblading on brown or black skin- hyperpigmentation risks

As we stated above, darker skin tones are thicker. As a result, the skin may not hold the colour as much as a very thin skin. In addition, skin types 4-6 heal a lot faster, however, they also have higher possibility of hyperpigmentation scarring.

These skin types have a have a greater capacity to build scars. This is where our assessment comes into place. Your technician will ask the right questions to assess any potential side effects.

Can I get microblading if I’m prone to keloid scarring?

We do not recommend it. If someone is prone to keloid scarring, the risk outweighs the benefits. Even if it is not building a protruding keloid, when those fibres reform, it will be a thicker version of the skin that was there before.

Plus, when it comes time for the Refresher, we would be the working on scar tissue, which is tougher and thicker than the original skin, which was thicker to begin with.

Fungal Nail Pedicure: The “Anti-Fungal”

fungal nail pedicure: the anti-fungal

Nail fungus does not cure itself.

But never fear! Located in Edmonton, Alberta, our spa offers a fungal nail pedicure to treat nail fungus, The Anti-Fungal.

A nail fungus can be compared to a parasite: Unless you remove one of the ideal conditions, fungus will continue to thrive. Ideal conditions include humidity, darkness, warm temperature, and nutrients (for example, dirt or dead skin cells).

How can I tell if I have nail fungus?

mani pedi whyte ave

Firstly, it will cause embarrassing odour. If left untreated long enough it starts to mutate. The fungus starts growing roots under the nails which bury themselves in the nail bed causing it to “pump” itself up. This pumping manifests as thick nails.

First Response: What can I do immediately?

  • Stop sharing socks or shoes.
  • Stop wearing acrylic/nylon material socks as they are more likely to cause feet to sweat.
  • Do not wear the same shoes 2 days in a row, especially closed-toed shoes made from material that builds moisture.
  • Do not wear poor quality shoes. Some shoes are made of plastic and the paint on the shoes is also plastic which causes sweaty feet and bacteria.
  • Clean and dry feet properly after bathing.
  • Do not cut nails so short that it breaks the seal.
  • Wear sandals in locker rooms.

Tips for IPL Hair Removal

tips for laser hair removal

To help you achieve ultimate success in your treatments, we’ve compiled some quick tips for your IPL laser hair removal sessions.

Tips for IPL hair removal

Pain tolerance

If you have a low pain tolerance take an ibuprofen or acetaminophen prior to your appointment. This will help decrease discomfort.

24 hours or less before your appointment

To maximize the success rate of your IPL hair removal treatments, give yourself the cleanest shave possible. If hair remains on the surface, theKeep in mind that the cleaner the shave, the better the results.

Throughout the course of your treatment

It is important to avoid all forms of hair removal that remove the hair root, for example, waxing. These types of hair removal cause interruptions in your treatment which in turn decrease the success rate.

In addition, avoid heat, friction, and irritants in the area being treated for approximately one week after each treatment. On that note, for irritating razor burn and ingrown hairs we recommend picking up some “Bump Stopper” solution found in the ethnic hair care section at most drug store/supermarkets.

Another tip is to discontinue usage any products containing AHA/BHA/Retin A/Vitamin A on the area being treated 2 weeks prior to each treatment.

Last but not least, we cannot stress the importance of staying on schedule. We need to target those new/recovered hair roots at just the right time!

Wishing you all peace, love, and great skin…and don’t forget to follow the tips above for successful IPL laser hair removal treatments!

IPL Hair Removal: Bikini Edition

IPL Hair Removal Styles

Did you know you have style options when it comes to Brazilian IPL laser hair removal in Edmonton? Choosing the right drapes to match your windows can be difficult enough in your home, so where do you start when deciding how to drape your…ehemm…vagine?

After many years in the spa industry we’ve heard some interesting tales and crafty names. Trends change throughout the years, from the 70’s low-maintenance shag to the 90’s thong-th-thong-thong-thong landing strip. Therefore, knowing what to request when booking your bikini hair removal is important to prevent confusion.

To keep things accurate when reading this article, we have included definitions for some commonly used terms:

  • “bikini line”- think basic full-seated bikini bottoms
  • “hairline”- the edge where your hair naturally begins
  • “front”- anything visible from frontal view
  • “underside”- lower area covering your lady bits
  • “backside”- the area beginning just after your bits up to your tailbone
  • “bunny tail”- the small area over the tailbone

The French

For those of you looking for a more defined bikini hairline, the French bikini offers more options for shaping and further removal. Most of the hair is removed from the front leaving a small patch of hair, this includes removal from underside, and excludes the backside.

The flattering little v-patch will bring the hairline down 2-3 inches from the bikini line, and give you most coverage at the top and taper neatly into the back.

The Brazilian

Contrary to popular belief, the traditional method of Brazilian hair removal does NOT leave you free of all hair below the waist. This traditional method leaves only a small strip down the centre. This look was modeled after the thong bikini bottom worn in Brazil which leaves little to the imagination, but still leaves a “little”.

So for you thong sporting ladies, a Brazilian bikini wax will give you the same flexibility with shape and coverage that the French bikini wax offers, but also clears any unwanted strays from the backside leaving you confident from any angle.

The Hollywood

Who needs hair down there anyway? If this is your motto then opt for a Hollywood bikini and liberate yourself from pubescent hair growth. The name is influenced by the adult industry associated with the provocative nature of the famous city of fast cars, bright lights, fame, and fortune. This method will clear all existing hair from front to bunny tail leaving you G-string ready all around. Many spas will refer to this technique as a Brazilian, so make sure to clarify with your technician.

Is CeraVe good for teen acne?

teen acne

Teen acne can be difficult to treat because teenagers’ hormones are not in balance. They are in a period of flux with little stability. In addition, some teens lack dedication when it comes to their skincare and personal grooming. As a result, (and understandably so) some parents opt out for more cost effective skincare products for their teen’s skincare.

“Is CeraVe good for my teen’s acne?”

CeraVe has a great range within their cleansing line. Cleansing is one of the most important steps when treating acne at home. They have 3 cleansers to select from.

The mildest one is the Foaming Facial cleanser, which contains hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. This combination will ensure your teen’s skin is not dry and dehydrated after, and also helps to calm some of the inflammation associated with acne.

The second option is the Renewing SA cleanser. This cleanser contains salicylic acid which is great for stripping away excess oil, and also for seeping into the pores and clearing them out. This option is best for teens that have very congested skin, blackheads, or thicker texture in the T-zone. Keep in mind that it can be a little too drying for teens that have more of a combination to oily skin type.

Last we have the Acne Foaming Cream wash. This cleanser is actually going to treat teen acne. It should be reserved only for those with moderate to severe acne skin types. It contains 10% benzoyl peroxide. Therefore, not only will it help clean and clear away the oil, but it will have antiseptic effects on the skin. In other words, it will clear away the bacteria causing the breakouts. This is an excellent option for teens that have pustules and pimples. Not only do they get the clearing and healing benefits, they will also help prevent future breakouts due to the antibacterial effects.

Treating teen acne at the spa

We offer a specialized facial for teens- the Teen Facial. This facial incorporates the steps necessary to clean and extract the skin.

IPL Hair Removal Treatment Frequency

ipl treatment frequency

What happens if you use IPL too often?

Treatment frequency for IPL Hair Removal (HR) sessions is 1 treatment every 6 to 8 weeks apart for body areas, and 4-6 weeks apart for facial areas. If you are having sessions too close together, you are basically working on hair that is most likely no longer alive. In other words, you are losing financially!

We need a live hair bulb in order to achieve results. Therefore, we need approximately 4-8 weeks of regrowth to have some live bulbs in the skin again. IPL is also something that you don’t want to be using too often. For this reason, we advise our clients that anything beyond 12 treatments within a 12 month period is far too much.

Like any light based treatment, IPL is a form of radiation so you want to make sure you are not overexposing your skin.

Does IPL or LASER remove hair permanently?

IPL and other light based treatments do not remove hair permanently- as in “forever”. There is always a small chance that you may have some regrowth through the years. The amount of regrowth can range from 2-50%. There are certain things that can influence that percentage. For example, hormonal changes, whether that be with age, pregnancy, or health conditions that can bring back hair growth or decrease hair growth.

Another factor to consider is the amount of reduction that was achieved during your treatment course. Regrowth percentage will influence reduction rate. A higher reduction rate, for example, 98% will have a lower regrowth percentage. On the other hand, a lower reduction rate such as 50% will see higher regrowth.
