Causation and Treatment of Nail Fungus

nail fungus treatment edmonton

Located in Edmonton, we offer treatment for nail fungus. There are 3 major categories of nail fungus sources:

Ill-fitted shoes

Tight-fitting shoes create pressure that traumatizes the nail therefore making it vulnerable to infections.

Improper pedicures

What constitutes an improper pedicure? Examples include reusing of disposable tools, poor cleaning protocols, and cross contamination. The risk of cross contamination is high when a Service Provider jumps between two simultaneous pedicures in order to maximize the number of clients served.

People with healthy, unbroken skin won’t regularly have an issue with improper pedicures. However, someone with unhealthy feet may fall prey to a fungus infection.

Shoe humidity

foot care

Athletes are most likely to develop fungus infections due to the humidity in their shoes. In addition, they often use locker rooms which are known to provide conditions that make fungi thrive (humidity).

In addition to humidity, runners in particular create extra pressure as their feet pound the pavement. This pressure traumatizes the nail therefore making it vulnerable to infections.

Nail Fungus Treatment

There are different levels of nail fungus treatment.

Anti-fungal drops

This is something you can do at home. The natural toenail takes one year to replace itself. This is the amount of time it will take to care for your feet with drops.

Advanced pedicure

In an Anti-Fungal Tx, we cut the nail down to a safe point in order to cut and scoop as much fungus out. We then insert soaked therapeutic pads where the fungus was removed. As a result, there is less area for moisture to collect.

Your service provider will provide you with post care to continue to care for your infected nail at home.

Getting Rid of Toenail Fungus

pedicure for nail fungus

How do I get rid of fungus on my toenails?

There are a few different steps that can and should be taken depending on the severity of the fungus. A nail fungus case is considered severe when the fungus has grown capillaries towards the tip of the toenail. If this is the case, it may be necessary to start antibiotics or other prescribed medications prior to having an advanced pedicure for nail fungus in a spa.

On the other hand, mild to moderate nail fungus can be treated with proper treatment, home care, and follow up care. The proper treatment is a specialized pedicure in which the nails are trimmed and filed down to an appropriate length. Next, the nails are thoroughly cleaned of any debris that may be obstructing and contributing to the condition.

The Anti-Fungal also includes detailed instructions for home care, along with products to sustain the progress.

How long does it take to treat fungus?

The process can take up to a year as a result of potential contamination. As a result, the natural nail must grow out. A healthy nail will then replace the infected nail. Healthy toenails take up to 12 months to fully restore themselves. In the case of infection and/or injury to the nail it can take longer.

What does fungus look like on feet?

In general, the toenail typically starts to thicken at the beginning. You may find excessive debris beneath and around the nail. There can be a foul odour associated with the fungus. In addition, you may see darkening and discolouration of the nail as well as change in texture.

Moreover, the growth rate may be affected. In severe cases, you may see visible vessels or roots at the tip of the toe nail as well as lifting of the nail.

Home care recommendations

We recommend you accompany treatments with home care. Footlogix Nail Tincture Spray is our recommended home care product.  This anti-microbial spray penetrates into the skin under the nail to eliminate fungus.

Fungal Nail Pedicure: The “Anti-Fungal”

fungal nail pedicure: the anti-fungal

Nail fungus does not cure itself.

But never fear! Located in Edmonton, Alberta, our spa offers a fungal nail pedicure to treat nail fungus, The Anti-Fungal.

A nail fungus can be compared to a parasite: Unless you remove one of the ideal conditions, fungus will continue to thrive. Ideal conditions include humidity, darkness, warm temperature, and nutrients (for example, dirt or dead skin cells).

How can I tell if I have nail fungus?

mani pedi whyte ave

Firstly, it will cause embarrassing odour. If left untreated long enough it starts to mutate. The fungus starts growing roots under the nails which bury themselves in the nail bed causing it to “pump” itself up. This pumping manifests as thick nails.

First Response: What can I do immediately?

  • Stop sharing socks or shoes.
  • Stop wearing acrylic/nylon material socks as they are more likely to cause feet to sweat.
  • Do not wear the same shoes 2 days in a row, especially closed-toed shoes made from material that builds moisture.
  • Do not wear poor quality shoes. Some shoes are made of plastic and the paint on the shoes is also plastic which causes sweaty feet and bacteria.
  • Clean and dry feet properly after bathing.
  • Do not cut nails so short that it breaks the seal.
  • Wear sandals in locker rooms.

In the event that you have a concern not addressed in the specialty menu, attach a note to your Classic pedi booking.

NAIL FUNGUS

Nail fungus does not heal itself. Unless you remove as many of the ideal conditions (e.g. humidity, darkness, warm temperature, and nutrients) fungus will continue to thrive.

If left untreated, not only will it cause odour, it will also start to mutate.

INGROWN NAILS

An ingrown toenail is caused by an overgrowth of nail along the side of the nail. Consequently, this condition creates pressure which can lead to swelling, a lot of pain, and even infections.

The extra growth can be attributed to factors such as incorrect nail cutting, trauma, or genetics.
