IPL treatments do not damage the skin if your technician sets the proper settings. The treatment delivers a pulse to the bulb of the hair. If the settings are inputted properly then it avoids being absorbed into the skin.
Aside from temporary heat in the area treated, there should not be adverse reactions on the skin. Heat in the skin typically lasts anywhere from one to 24 hours.
Who should not get IPL hair removal?
Not everyone is eligible for IPL treatments. While the light energy of IPL itself will not damage the skin, certain factors could result in damage.
Certain medications
Anyone that has skin conditions in the areas being treated that are contrandicated should avoid IPL. Certain medications, topical or oral, can make the skin sensitive or photosensitive.
People with light hair tones, for example blonde, white, or silver hair should have realistic expectations of IPL hair removal treatments. Sometimes these hair colours don’t have enough melanin for the machine to be able to register and destroy the targeted hair bulb.
If the person’s hair is too light there may not be enough contrast between the hair and skin tone. The machine favours skin types that show a better contrast of dark hair on a lighter skin background. Having this contrast tends to allow for maximum absorption of light energy directly into the bulb.
That is not to say that other skin types are not successful, we would simply change the setting for this. However, there is a point where if the skin and hair tone are too close together. The machine may confuse the melanin content in the skin for the target and could cause burning or not actually treat the hair becasue the settings are maintained too low to make a difference in an effort to avod hitting the skin tone.
Tattoos
People with tattoos in the area being treated should avoid IPL. Your technician has to stay a safe distance from existing tattoos in order to avoid heating and potentially damaging the pigment that is implanted with the tattoo.
Pregnancy
In addition, pregnant women should refrain from IPL treatments. This is not to say that it will necessarily cause any damage to the fetus, but it’s best to avoid any form of radiation treatment during pregnancy and light is a form of radiation.
Keeping exposure to a minimum is key when you’re pregnant because you’re already being exposed to the radiation that’s emitted through the ultrasounds continuously being done which is a very high form of radiation. For the record, ultrasound and IPL both use non-ionizing radiation, however, IPL is comparatively very superficial.
In conclusion, while there are some individuals that should stay away from IPL treatments, IPL treatments do not damage the skin with proper settings.
“Can I use the same products for morning and night?” is a common question asked by our clients. If your skin is at its prime, meaning it’s balanced and functioning at it’s best, your cleanser should be fine for morning and night use.
Keep in mind that “prime” doesn’t mean perfect skin for every skin type. If you are happy with your cleanser there is no need to change it. However, you may want to consider adding an oil cleanser for nighttime use. These are excellent at removing makeup and are often used as a first cleanse.
The decision to change moisturizers depend on what you are using. Basic moisturizers are fine for day or night. However, if you are using a moisturizer that contains sunscreen then you can’t use that at night. On the contrary, if you are using a product that contains retinol you can’t use that during the day.
Serums are the product to most likely have specific uses appropriate for certain times of day. For example, hyaluronic acid serums are best to use during the day when trans-epidermal water loss is highest. Vitamin C and E are good serums to use in the day time as they are good for sun protection.
Different beauty regimes
In addition, there are different regimes to consider when deciding whether or not to use the same products for morning and night. There are two types of regimes: maintenance versus treatment. During maintenance regimes you can cleanse and moisturize with the same products.
On the other hand, treatment regimes vary depending on what is happening with your skin. You may be able to use many of the same products if they are effective, but at night you may want to add products with ingredients to correct your skin concerns.

” I had my first acne treatment peel a week ago. I have not seen any peeling or flaking…”
Do not fret as you are still in the early stages of the treatment. Patience is key with chemical peels!
The visible reaction caused by chemical peels during and post-treatment varies per individual. There are a few key points we will cover as we help you understand your skins’ response and expectations for your recent acne treatment peel.
1 | The waiting period
At this point, it is too soon to rate the success of your treatment. Your skin is still undergoing the process of lifting the layer of skin that was separated during the application of the peel. Once the skin has fully separated from the underlying skin cells, it will begin to shed. This can take up to 2 weeks.
2 | Not all skins shed alike
When we google or hear the term ‘chemical peel’, we assume our skin will be immediately shedding in sheets or visible patches of skin.
The visible reaction through the healing process depends on the skin type and condition being treated. Oily and acne-prone skin is coarser and has a thicker oil barrier holding the skin cells together. Shedding occurs most during and after cleansing and even so does not flake like a dry skin type. Trust in the process and use exfoliant 2-3 times a week for an added boost.
3 | Number of peels
Peels are most effective when delivered in a controlled manner in order to avoid injury and produce lasting results.
To begin, the skin is treated using lighter peels in order to increase the skin’s tolerance. With each treatment, the intensity of the peels is increased until optimal results are achieved. This measured approach allows for the application of stronger acids with less risk of causing adverse reactions or irreversible damage to the skin. Keep in mind that the stronger the peel, the more visible reaction during and post-treatment.
Although the name and online visuals of the treatment can lead one to believe that all peels should cause major flaking and sloughing, this is not always the case. Be patient with your progress and trust that your skin is operating in its’ own unique way and the skin is rejuvenating on a microscopic level regardless of what you see with the naked eye.

What will dermaplaning do for my skin?
The process brightens the complexion, evens skin tone, and leaves the skin feeling supple and smooth.
How does dermaplaning work?
The technician gently grazes a medical-grade scalpel edge over the surface of the skin. This process delivers a fine shave that removes the dull surface skin and vellus facial hair.
When will I notice my results?
A: The results of dérmaPLANE are seen immediately following the procedure. The goal is to leave the skin feeling softer and looking radiant. Contrast is most evident when comparing the appearance before and after service, in those who have major build up and visible hair growth.
Q: Are there any side effects?
A: There are typically no side effects from the procedure. Your skin may feel slightly exposed and sensitive for 1-2 hours following. It is recommended that with any professional skin care service extended sun exposure is avoided for a minimum 24-hour period.
Facials are a great way to keep your pores clean and free of oil or impurities that can cause breakouts. We recommend booking a facial every 4-6 weeks.
Chemical peels are great for skin rejuvenation because they accelerate the cell turnover rate by chemically penetrating beneath the surface of the skin to dissolve away dead skin cells. If you are treating a concern, such as sun damage, fine lines, or hyperpigmentation, we recommend 4-8 sessions.
Photofacials use Intense Pulse Light (IPL) technology to diminish brown spots, redness, broken capillaries, fine lines and other textural damage. We recommend 4-6 treatments when treating the above skin concerns.
Dérmaplane delivers a fine shave that removes the dull surface skin and vellus facial hair as the technician gently grazes a medical-grade scalpel edge over the surface of the skin.
