Men with beards can get LASER and other forms of phototherapy including IPL treatments. However, if you wish to keep your facial hair, you are limited to areas above your desired beard line. This is because hair reduction is a side effect of phototherapy.
Skin treatments for bearded men
For bearded men with skin concerns such as acne scarring, large pores, dark spots, or fine lines, we offer 1/2 face treatments that exclude the lower half of the face.
Large pores
A common skin concern amongst our male clientele is enlarged pores on the nose area. Usually what happens is over time the pores become slightly larger as we age and expose them to daily stressors, for example, hot showers. Because the pores grow larger, they are more susceptible to collecting and clogging up with oil/sweat/products/debris/etc. This clogging provides a darker colour making the pores stand out against the rest of your skin.
To treat this concern, we recommend starting with a PORE facial to extract the pores in preparation for phototherapy. Photofacials will help reduce the size of the pores. As a result, your pores will be less susceptible to collecting oil/sweat/products/debris/etc and will stay clear for longer periods.
Redness and broken capillaries
Another common skin concern for men is facial redness and broken capillaries. Redness and broken capillaries could be due to conditions such as Rosacea, couperose skin, sensitized skin, or simply genetically sensitive skin.
These types of conditions are characterized by frequent, consistent redness, and visible redness and broken capillaries. If left untreated these conditions can worsen, or mutate the skin’s texture. Men with beards can get laser treatments to address these types of concerns.
Beardline precision treatment
Men with facial hair can opt for a clean beard line 24/7! With IPL hair removal, we are able to permanently shape the beard line with laser precision. IPL treatments zap live hair roots. As a result, regrowth stops in the treated areas.
Permanent beard removal
Men who wish to remove their beard permanently can do so with IPL Hair Removal. This can be booked online as a “half-face” treatment.
Located in Edmonton, Dérmica offer IPL hair removal treatments to remove hair on the face permanently.
Can IPL remove facial hair permanently?
IPL equipment delivers results by emitting a specific range of light energy towards a specific target in the skin. When it comes to facial and body hair, the target is the hair bulb.
Hair colour plays an important role when setting expectations for treatment outcomes. The light energy pulsed by the operating system targets pigment cells found in the hair bulb. As a result, the more pigment cells present, the more energy is absorbed and therefore, producing optimal results.
IPL Hair Removal Treatment Protocols
Our IPL Hair Removal treatment will deliver permanent results on any area of face and body. Above all, razor burn, ingrown hairs, and embarrassing stubble will be a thing of the past!
Your safety is our first concern, therefore, please review the following criteria before booking online.

Discontinue usage any products containing AHA/BHA/Retin A/Vitamin A on the area being treated 2 weeks prior to procedure
Wait a minimum of 4 weeks (or up to 6 weeks for darker skin types) from last tanning (artificial or natural) AND/OR waxing session
If currently on any prescription medications, check with your physician regarding possible photosensitivity
Contraindications:
Diabetes
Pregnancy
Disorders stimulated by light
Cancer (remission under 2 years)
Epilepsy
Use of photosensitive medication and herbs
Active infection of Herpes Simplex in treatment area
Use of anticoagulants
If any, potential side effects can include discomfort and fragile skin. Visible effects, for instance, edema (swelling) and erythema (redness), can last up to 24 hours.
Your technician will conclude the session by providing Post Care instructions. After that, you can expect your hair to shed approximately 2 weeks post-treatment. Subsequently, we recommend rebooking every 4-8 weeks.
Treatment course length
Facial areas require shorter rebooking timeframes than body areas. We recommend 8-12 treatment sessions spread 4-6 weeks apart. That is to say, a successful IPL treatment course requires commitment.
Treatment Tips
Phototherapy treatments “zap” live hair follicles while waxing removes them from the bulb. As a result, waxing counteracts IPL and laser treatments. Consequently, shaving is the only method of hair removal in between sessions.
Additionally, exfoliating twice per week will help prevent ingrown hairs.
Please shave the morning of your appointment. Furthermore, area should be shaved flush to the skin for best results.

What will dermaplaning do for my skin?
The process brightens the complexion, evens skin tone, and leaves the skin feeling supple and smooth.
How does dermaplaning work?
The technician gently grazes a medical-grade scalpel edge over the surface of the skin. This process delivers a fine shave that removes the dull surface skin and vellus facial hair.
When will I notice my results?
A: The results of dérmaPLANE are seen immediately following the procedure. The goal is to leave the skin feeling softer and looking radiant. Contrast is most evident when comparing the appearance before and after service, in those who have major build up and visible hair growth.
Q: Are there any side effects?
A: There are typically no side effects from the procedure. Your skin may feel slightly exposed and sensitive for 1-2 hours following. It is recommended that with any professional skin care service extended sun exposure is avoided for a minimum 24-hour period.
