Hand and Nail Care for Gardeners

Nail Care Tips for Gardeners

As a gardener you are exposed to a lot of soil and other drying and possibly irritating materials. To protect your nails while gardening, we recommend the use of a good hand moisturizer to minimize the drying effects. Thicker moisturizers are ideal when working with moisture or water as they have a bit more water-resistance.

Aside from that you can also include the use of gardening gloves that will provide complete protection. The lotion on the inside will help prevent chafing from the fabric.

Cuticle care

The cuticles will be dryer due to that exposure. So, using things such as cuticle oil or a cuticle serum is very helpful. Plus, doing a thorough cleaning using a nail brush after gardening underneath the nails is important.

Manicures are the ideal way of treating and maintaining your hands. A detailed manicure will include care of the cuticles and cleaning of the nails which can also resolve staining issues.

What is included in a classic manicure?

The classic manicure includes a detailed cleaning and grooming of the nail plate, the cuticle area, the surrounding tissue on the nails, and underneath. It also includes shaping and evening out the nail length. In addition, it includes a relaxing hand massage to help rehydrate and nourish the skin and cuticles. The cherry on top? A warm paraffin dip to help relax the knots and muscles and stimulate circulation in the hands which leaves the hands with a youthful glow.

What is the difference between a gel manicure and a classic manicure?

Gel manicure include all of the classical manicure components with the addition of the light-cured gel polish.

Can you garden with gel nails?

Gel polish is fine when you garden as long as you protect your manicure. The dryness may cause it chip a little sooner than you’d like it to. On the other hand, if you have gel nail extensions, depending on the length of the extension, they may interfere with tactile movements.

Dry Cuticle Treatment

dry cuticle treatment

Q: Dear Dermica,

Lately my hands and cuticles have been very dry. What is a good dry cuticle treatment?

Dry Cuticles/Hands

A: This is a very common issue in Alberta.

Here are our recommendations. Follow through and your hands will feel and look amazing!

Cracked/Dry Cuticles

Dry cuticle treatment requires that you always ensure that you have good quality cuticle oil on hand for application throughout the day. Apply a generous amount and massage into the cuticle and nails. Leave the excess oil to absorb, trust us, it will. Also remember to include your nails in the application, as they can use a good dose of moisture to prevent brittle nails.

If you have inflamed cracks in the cuticles, this is most likely a sign of infection. Apply a small amount of Polysporin™ to the affected area and finish off with your cuticle oil for protection and moisture.

Dry Hands

First and foremost use a good quality hand moisturizer morning, day, and night, and re-apply after washing. Moisturizers specific for hands feature non-greasy formulations, which are great if you’re not used to wearing moisturizer. Some of us though don’t mind the gleam of moisturizer on our hands and the heavy moisture, butters and balms are great for this. Now when heading out apply a good coat of moisturizer before putting on your gloves, the warmth of your gloves will aid in product penetration and keep your hands safe from the elements.

Home Recipe Cuticle Balm

    • Melt 1 tbsp of Coconut Oil (great for moisture protection) in a small saucepan on very low heat

    • Once melted stir in 2 drops of Lavender Essential Oil (increases moisture and elasticity)

    • Remove from heat and pour into a small jar with tight lid (lip balm containers work great)

    • Place closed jar in the freezer and let cool for 10-15 minutes (until hardened)

    • Remove and lube away!

Brittle Nails Treatment

brittle nails treatment

What is it?

Brittle nails sensitivity got you looking for treatment? Brittle nails are very thin nails that split, crack, and peel easily. Although it could be hereditary, there are other things that can cause brittle nails. Examples include dryness caused by certain soaps or detergents, a lack of moisture around the nails, aging, iron deficiency, other health conditions.

It is important that you get checked by a doctor if you see other changes in your health along with the brittle nails.

Brittle Nails Treatment

Our Classic Manicure is a great treatment not only because of the massage and paraffin application, but also the use of vitamin e lotion and cuticle oil nourishes the hands and nails with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Plus, the polish application helps to build strength.

Nail strengtheners can be used at home.

Have you heard of nail strengtheners or hardeners? They are useful as well and can be used at home or applied during your manicure.

Manicure abstinence?

Brittle nails can also be a result of bad manicures or bad nails jobs. Over-filing when applying or removing is a common cause of brittle nails. In addition, ripping off unwanted gel or acrylic nails will contribute to brittle nails.

If this is the case, you just have to wait until the nails rebuild strength! We recommend no more nail applications until the nails have restored themselves enough.
