Blackhead extractions

blackhead extractions

A guilty pleasure.

There’s something about popping blemishes that can be so satisfying to watch. Pimple popping videos gained such popularity, there was a television series devoted to the extraction!

So, what does this juicy procedure involve? Read on as we dive into your pores for a proper blackhead extraction!

blackheads

Blackhead extractions are the focal point of our pore cleansing facial: the PORE.

Pore cleansing is the process of physically and/or chemically removing debris from the pores. The process clears build-up from the pores and allows them to contract.

Start with a fresh face.

Extractions are best on freshly cleansed and exfoliated skin. Cleansing ensures that no harmful bacteria is present when exposing the open pore. Exfoliation clears the opening of the pore and loosens the tip of the debris.

After cleansing and exfoliating, a specialized solution is applied to help dislodge the oily debris. The solution is commonly a sodium bicarbonate blend that creates a chemical reaction known as saponification. Consequently, oils and fats are transformed into a soap solution. In addition, oily debris becomes water-soluble in the process.

The skin is then placed under a warm steamer. The warmth and humidity of the steam opens up the pores.

O3

Professional steamers feature an Ozone (O3) function that emits ozone steam onto the skin. Oincreases the skin’s healing abilities and disinfects the surface. O3 also has an oil-reducing effect that lasts beyond the service.

The moment we’ve all been waiting for…

Physical extractions are performed using a special tool with directional pressure. Large pores are emptied using a “scooping” maneuver, while smaller pores are purged with a simple glide of the tool or fingers.

Following extractions, the skin is soothed and sanitized with a post extraction solution. The solution usually contains an antiseptic and a calming ingredient.

Blackhead extractions can take 15-30 minutes depending on the skin condition. They can also leave the skin looking irritated for 1-2 hours. Once the pores are cleared, they can remain clear for up to 8 weeks.

When it comes to our role as skincare technicians, we must say juicy extractions are by far a service favourite!

Sensitive Skin Care Tips

Try our skin care tips for sensitive skin.

Skin Sensitivity

Vascular lesions are due to conditions such as Rosacea, couperose skin, sensitized skin, or skin trauma. These types of conditions are characterized by frequent, consistent redness, and visible redness and broken capillaries. They are most commonly found in the facial and neck area. If left unchecked these conditions can worsen, or mutate the skin’s texture. The following sensitive skin care tips will help you prevent flare-ups.

TIPS on how to calm your skin.

1. Avoid applying heat to the skin. For example: hot showers, heating fan in your vehicle, extended sun exposure.

2. Limit alcohol (especially red wine 😵) consumption when your are already experiencing a skin flush.

3. Use fragrance free and gentle products on your skin.

4. Switch out your facial scrub for a gentle enzymatic exfoliant.

5. Use soothing mask 2-3 times/ week to hydrate and calm your skin.

6. Keep your moisturizer in the door compartment of your fridge for added cooling effect.

Environmental factors to consider

Weather

Protect skin from sun, wind, and excess temperatures (something we all experience living in Canada). We cannot emphasize how important using sunscreen daily is, even during winter! Throughout the winter months, cover your cheeks and face with a scarf. Wash the scarf/scarves regularly. If possible, replace the scarf every day or every other day to prevent breakouts.

To Peel or Not to Peel?

chemical peels

What can skin peels do for me?

The chemicals used in skin peels are acids that are derived from natural sources. A peel involves chemically removing the outermost layers of the skin which in return promotes exfoliation and cell turnover. Depending on the type of peels used they can help treat fine lines, textural issues, acne, scarring, redness and provide a fresher, healthier appearance to the skin.

Chemical peels can be done on any area of the body, most commonly the face, neck, chest, hands and back.

Peels range in strength and have amazing benefits, however, they contain powerful peeling agents and have the ability to really hurt someone if not properly administered. Through a a proper consultation, your professional service provider will educate you about the peel and the expected outcomes including post treatment instructions.

Different peels can be mixed together and are known as blended peels. They can also be mixed with other ingredients such as vitamin c, hylauronic acid and dead sea minerals to pack an extra punch and provide a variety of additional benefits.

Whether you’d like to use peels as an anti aging method, or have a clear skin goal, your service provider can create a treatment plan customized for you.

Top 3 Chemical Peels

Let’s take a look at some of the most popular chemical peels and their benefits.

1. Glycolic Acid

glycolic acid peels yeg This is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and is made up of the smallest molecules compared to others. Do not let the molecule size fool you though, glycolic acid is a powerhouse in terms of performance. This acid exfoliates the outermost layers of skin but also has the ability to penetrate deeper into the skin and stimulate cell turnover. Glycolic acid works from the inside out which provides a plumper appearance. Think lighten, brighten and tighten.

2. Lactic Acid

lactic acid peels edmontonYes you guessed it, this acid is milk-derived and is also an AHA. Lactic acid is wonderful for hydration, brightening and the best choice for those with sensitive skin. This is one of the more gentle peels and a great option for beginners or those who are not a candidate for more aggressive peels.

3. Salicylic Acid

acne peels yegThis is a Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) and is derived from willow bark. This acid is made up of a larger molecular size which means it works on the outer layers of skin. This acid is antiseptic and anti-inflammatory making it the top choice when dealing with acne, redness and oily skin. We like to think of this acid like Pac-Man running along the surface of the skin gobbling up dead skin cells and breaking through oil.
