IPL and LASER are different permanent hair removal procedures that have a similar purpose and achieve similar results.
They achieve their results by emitting a specific range of light energy towards a specific target in the skin.
IPL and Laser are both safe and effective treatment methods for treating skin conditions and permanently reducing unwanted hair. It is important to remember that results vary with both methods, there are specific guidelines to follow pre/post treatment, and number of sessions can range from 4-12.
LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation)
Lasers operate by emitting a single wave of steady or pulsed laser light into their target. Depending on the manufacturer of the laser equipment, some lasers are not suitable for all skin tones or skin conditions. As a result, the technician is required to use different attachments or machines for treatment.
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
IPL technologies project flashes of light energy onto the surface of the skin. The handheld device is placed directly on the skin and flashed at set intervals. The device emits a broad band of light energy into the skin, which is then quickly absorbed by the target. The diameter covered by the spot size varies and is ideal for larger areas.
At Dérmica, we offer IPL treatments for skin care and hair removal solutions. Our chosen technology is safe and customizable thanks to its ‘DPC’ technology. DPC stands for Dynamic Pulse Control. The DPC technology means that we can determine the “aggressiveness” of the treatment based on the duration of the pulse- shorter pulses are more aggressive, delivering the light beam in a shorter period of time, while longer pulses are less aggressive as they have a longer period to deliver the light beam. The different range of pulse durations results in a major increase in the safety and effectiveness of the treatment.

Hot yoga effects on the skin will vary according to the individual’s skin type, age, and other health related factors.
Under-stimulated skin types such as dry or mature will benefit from the stimulation brought on by the steam. Heat helps increase circulation which can in turn aid in stimulating the oil production and absorption levels of the skin.
Natural processes have slowed down in aging skin in particular. The stimulation caused by the heat will help increase the cell turnover rate, and hydration and moisture levels that decrease with age.
There are certain skin conditions or medications that can cause the skin to become sensitive or sensitized to heat application. This includes the hot yoga. The two main skin care concerns we see as technicians resulting from heat sensitivity are Rosacea and Acne.
Rosacea & Acne prone skin
Rosacea is aggravated by the application of heat. A person with this condition may cause potential harm to their skin.
Acne prone skin types will see an increase in oil production. As a result, they end up making their skin more susceptible to bacterial infections. This is because they are sweating profusely while the pores are open by the added heat and humidity.
Exposure frequency
If you are exposing your skin to that level of heat and activity on a daily basis, regarding of your skin type, hot yoga is going to have damaging effects on your skin. Overheating the skin can have a drying effect and cause inflammation and vascular lesions on the skin.
Tips to heal heat damage
If you love hot yoga and are regularly participating, there are things you can do to counteract the effects of the heat exposure.
One thing you can do is ensure that you always do a cold wash after your workout. In other words, don’t wait to wash your face until you get home. It’s not so much about cleaning it, it’s about calming it. Once you get home you can do a deep cleanse and care using nourishing products such as masks or serums that contain hyaluronic acid or aloe vera.
If you are a dryer skin type, make sure that you use the appropriate moisturizer for your skin to lock in the hydration. If you have acne-prone skin, you may benefit from a cleanser that contains salicylic acid which will help counterbalance the increased oil production caused by the heat exposure.
Generally speaking, lash tint is safe and does not damage the eyes. The tints used on eyelashes are a mild version of hair dye. Usually, they are vegetable-based with a very low peroxide content. If or when there is irritation, it can be due to previous conditions such as sensitive or watery eyes, folliculitis, or skin irritations surrounding the eye area or other forms of dermatitis.
If someone is experiencing a case of folliculitis it could also be attributed to that. Otherwise, in a professional setting the service is safe.
What should you avoid after eyelash tint?
You should avoid the application of eye makeup and cleansing of the eye area for up to 48 hours if possible. Doing so allows the colour to properly saturate and set into the cuticle of the hair.
How often is it safe to tint eyelashes?
Eyelash tinting can be done every 4-6 weeks.
Does tint weaken the eyelashes?
Lash tint does not weaken the lashes. As mentioned above, the tint is a mild formulation that does not change the hair growth pattern or penetrate deep into the hair. However, like any form of chemical processing- mild or intense- you should always be conditioning, not only for the health of the hair but also to prolong the results of your service.
In a professional setting where the service is delivered by a trained technician there should not be any concern regarding eye damage when having IPL hair removal or any other method of phototherapy. That is not to say there is never reason for concern. However, any contraindications can be determined during your consultation. For example, reasons for concern could include the use of medications that cause sensitivity in the eyes, or recent eye surgery or trauma.
Otherwise, the precautions taken when preparing the client for the treatment are enough to prevent any harmful side effects to the eyes.
How do you prevent eye damage during laser/ IPL hair removal?
Precautions involve the use of goggles. Goggles are made from different materials depending on the manufacturer’s recommendation for the type of phototherapy and the intensity of the treatment. Eyewear protection can range from translucent lenses to fully enclosed goggles. Anything that has been deemed harmful to the vision is filtered out by the appropriate eyewear.
Potential Side Effects to the Eyes
IPL/ laser hair removal is safe for the eyes. Minor side effects include pressure from enclosed goggles during the procedure. Some light may still be visible even with protective eyewear. After the treatment there may be a bit of haziness that lasts a few minutes. This is usually due to the pressure of the goggles and having your eyes closed for so long.
