Acne Treatments Edmonton: the Do’s & Don’ts of Acne
If you have ever battled with Acne you can relate to the physical and emotional toll it can take on you. Acne can also be a sensitive subject to approach when searching for the answers and solutions for this condition. So in this blog series titled “the Do’s & Don’ts of Acne” we will be looking at the most common causes of acne and giving out some PRO TIPS in hopes to shed some light on this rather touchy subject.
The most important thing when beginning your search is understanding your own skin condition and the source of your condition.
In this segment of our series we will begin by looking at one of the contributing factors: Diet and Nutrition.
Diet can play a major role in aggravating conditions of the skin, acne being one of them. Your diet may not necessarily be the cause but it can either help treat the condition or interfere, and set-back treatment. Remember that anything ingested by the body effects on major organs, and with your skin being the largest and most visible of all, it is the window into your internal health.
Studies have shown that acneic skin is deprived of important essential vitamins and nutrients. To help address this chemical imbalance you must restore healthy levels within your body. Now let’s get to the “ the do’s and don’ts of the anti-acne diet.
- Vitamin E. In studies, acneic skin shows to be deprived of this essential antioxidant. Natural food sources include: almonds, hazelnuts, spinach, and kale
- Vitamin C.. This natural antioxidant helps reduce inflammation and redness. Natural food sources include: citrus fruits, strawberries, raspberries, papaya, and pineapple
- Vitamin B3.. This natural element aids the body in transforming different foods into energy. Natural food sources include: mushrooms, potatoes, whole grains, meats and alternatives
- Omega 3 Fatty Acid.. Omega 3 levels are lacking in the average diet and are essential to proper skin health. Natural sources include: fish oils, salmon, free range meats and eggs
- Water.. Keep your skin hydrated by keeping the cells within your body hydrated as well. Your body needs to maintain a water balance in order to carry out its daily functions
- Sugars. Food high in sugar can spike healthy insulin levels in the body. This can have a negative effect on acne and worsen the condition
- Dairy. Dairy products can have an effect on the amount of oil produced in the skin, so be conscious of your dairy intake. For other sources of calcium try include leafy greens in your diet
I recommend focusing on one area at a time, this will help you pinpoint possible sources and treat appropriately. Once you have taken care of possible internal imbalances, controlling the external condition will be much easier.

ALISA ME is Dérmica’s very own Skin Resurfacing/ Skin Rejuvenation/ Skin Tightening laser treatment in Edmonton
Skin Resurfacing Edmonton, ALISA ME- FAQs
Q: How does the ALISA ME Rx work?
A: The ALISA ME Rx is also known as Skin Rejuvenation or Skin Resurfacing, which is a treatment used to reverse the signs of aging through the non-traumatic removal of skin surface layers that induce neocollagenesis (the production of new collagen). Through this process, pulsed light is delivered though selective photothermolysis. Following the removal of surface skin layers at a particular depth, the body’s natural wound-healing response begins to regenerate the epidermis and the underlying wounded skin layers, which gives an overall glow and youthful look to the skin, but more specifically, treats fine lines and wrinkles and minimizes large pores.
Q: What is Selective Photothermolysis?
A: Selective Photothermolysis is a method that destroys a specified target without damaging the surrounding tissue. The method consists of irradiating the target and the surrounding tissue with pulsed visible radiation that is preferentially absorbed by the target, which results in that area being heated above body temperature which causes the proteins to coagulate. Because the target absorbs the radiation much more strongly than the surrounding tissue, this surrounding tissue is almost not heated at all.
Q: Is the ALISA ME Rx safe at 65 years old?
A: Absolutely! There are no contraindications based on age since light-based treatments are safe and non-invasive.
Q: How many treatments are required?
A: The typical regimen is an average of 5 treatment sessions, spaced 4 weeks apart in order to give your skin the time needed to recover and produce new collagen. However, the number of treatments is completely up to you depending on the results you desire. Having said that, we do not recommend over 12 treatments in one year.
Q: How long is the recovery phase? Is there any downtime?
A: The ALISA ME Rx does NOT require any downtime whatsoever! You can come in during your lunch hour and return to work and no one will ever know why you look better than you did in the morning! ;)
Q: How long does a treatment take?
A: This depends on the different treatments you would like during your session, however, a full ALISA ME photo facial Rx takes 15-30 minutes, after which you can continue your daily routine.
Q: Is the ALISA ME Rx Safe?
A: Our Skin Experts are knowledgeable on our technology, AND on the biology of the skin. Our team is lead by experts in the field with over 10 years of experience in medical esthetics treatments. This increases the safety of all of our treatments. Our treatments are non-invasive and safe, with minimum side effects if any at all. Side effects could possibly include:
- Discomfort (stinging sensation up to one hour after treatment)
- Change of Pigmentation (most cases occur on people with darker skin and can be avoided by conducting a test patch
- Fragile Skin (skin may become temporarily fragile)
- Purpura (purple bruising lasting from 5-15 days)
- Scarring (may happen on darker skin but still, very rare)
Questions or concerns? We’d be happy to hear from you!

Give that lazy skin a much needed boost: Summer Series Package of Photofacials Edmonton, $275
As we age our bodies will inevitably go through many changes and stages. Our bodily functions begin to slow along with our lifestyles. We begin to notice changes in the way we look and feel. One of the first things that may come to mind when considering the aging process is the slowing of metabolism. When we think about the declining rate of metabolism, most will only consider the metabolic rate of the digestive system. But what about the cell metabolism of our skin?
Our bodies are comprised of billions of specialized cells. These cells are grouped according to functions, and make up the different body systems and organs within the human anatomy. The largest organ found within the body is the skin. Its main function is to protect the body from the external environment and regulate body temperature. It is a reflection of your current health, age, and often times your lifestyle.
Typically in our late 20’s – mid 30’s our skin cells slow down and become “lazy”, they no longer regenerate at the same speed in which it used to in our earlier years. This laziness creates a backlog of dead cells on the surface of the skin and paves the way for the appearance of fine lines, dehydration, premature wrinkles, and dullness. Sun damage endured over the years now begins to reach the surface in the form of brown spots (hyperpigmentation), broken capillaries, and excessive ruddiness.
The first step in the anti-aging journey is prevention. It is never too early to start caring for your skin and preparing for what the years will bring. I recommend my younger clients begin with a healthy homecare regimen which includes proper cleansing and hydration day and night. A fresh cleanse in the morning and daily moisturizer with a minimum 20 SPF, and a hydrating eye gel to keep your eye area looking vibrant. At the end of the day I suggest a double cleanse to first clear the skin of daily environmental buildup/makeup, and then wash the bare skin itself. This routine will keep your skin balanced and protected throughout the day and night. For younger clients beginning a professional skin treatment schedule, Photofacials will deliver immediate results in the clearance of fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and tightening of pores and texture. With a refresher treatment every 6 months your skin will defy age!
The changes and damage to our skin do not happen overnight, and everyday time slowly claims its youth. Therefore once the skin reaches a more advanced stage in aging, reversing the effects of time is a process that also takes time and commitment. Understanding your skin care products and the interactions of the ingredients with your skin is important when selecting your products. What may have worked a few years ago may not be ideal for your skin now. Ensure that your products are age appropriate, targeted to treat your areas of concern, and most importantly protect your skin from further damage with minimum SPF20.
At this stage in the aging process resurfacing and exfoliation are vital in keeping your cells active, and clear of nutrient blocking dead cells. When selecting a professional skin treatment regimen for mature clientele, we begin by resurfacing and firming the skin with the Alisa ME Photofacial. This advanced treatment will boost collagen production, speed of cell regeneration, tighten pores, and plump the skin.
Our next step is to clear away hyperpigmentation such as sun damage and age spots with the Aclara ME treatments. This treatment will dissolve pigment by pulling it to the surface, forcing it to shed the spot within days. Once your desired results are achieved you can maintain with a refresher every 6 months, keeping your skin looking fresh and vibrant!
